Who is required to have this card?

√ All boaters born on or after January 1, 1988

√ Who operate a motorized watercraft of 10 HP or more

√ Must have a valid NC Boater Education Card on board

I was born before January 1, 1988… can I still take the course?

Yes! Safe boating benefits all boaters! You can register for the class and get your North Carolina Boater education card, too. (It’s just not required.) Safe boating is always in style.

The Outer Banks U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Boat America Boating Safety Class:

√ Is taught by certified Coast Guard Auxiliary instructors

√ Completes required course material + exam in the same day

√ Successful completion of this course satisfies the NC requirement

√ Is locally held here on the Outer Banks.

√ The North Carolina Boater Education Card is valid for a lifetime

When: May 11, 2024 one-day only

Where: Southern Shores Fire Department, 15 S. Dogwood Trail, Southern Shores NC 27949

Time:  8:30am – 4:30pm

Cost: $30 includes all materials + refreshments. Each additional family member is $25.

All seats are on a first come, first served basis for this one-day class.

What course topics to expect:

√ Introduction to Boating – Types of boats, boating terms and boating equipment.

√ Boating Law – Registration, regulations, and State and Federal requirements.

√ Safety Equipment – Life jackets, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devises, visual distress signals, anchors, and other safety equipment.

√ Local Knowledge – learn about boating in the OBX from local Coast Guard Auxiliarists
