If you have limited experience with Marine Chart Plotters, GPS Systems, and electronic charts, then this one-day course is for you. The Outer Banks U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is now enrolling students for its new one-day seminar, Introduction to Marine Navigation using GPS & Chart Plotting.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The Global Positioning System – how it works, and how to use it.
  • Traditional marine coastal navigation in the Outer Banks, using classical navigation methods including paper charts and plotting tools.
  • Plan a realistic voyage in the Albemarle and Roanoke Sounds
  • Key navigation concepts, potential hazards, and safety measures.
  • Demonstrate transferring planned voyage routes to actual Chart Plotter equipment.
  • Actual Chart Plotter equipment for familiarization with major features, software capabilities, and interface to other marine equipment.
  • Taught by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary certified teachers.

 Local One Day Seminar

The course will be taught, one-day only, on Saturday December 13, 2025, from 8:30am to 3pm EST. It’s located here on the Outer Banks, at Southern Shores Fire Station on 15 S. Dogwood Trail in Kitty Hawk, NC. The cost is $60 per person, which includes lunch.  Registration is required.
